After two seasons as a moderately successful football coach at a small college, Jake Oats is hired to revitalize a major conference program. He struggles with campus intrigue, an ambivalent school administration, players he never recruited, and putting together a quality staff. His attempts to balance career and family is complicated by student body pressure during the age of campus demonstrations. Facing great and small challenges, Jake wrestles with the burden of his wartime past.
