In 96 AD/CE, Dionysius, one of Ephesus's most hedonistic and wealthy citizens, is murdered inside the building meant to memorialize his life.
When the building's architect, Yechiel, is arrested, his wife implores Sabina, the daughter of a powerful Roman magistrate, to use her sleuthing talents to save her husband from Rome's brutal injustice. But Sabina, a young Christian widow living with her pagan father, regretfully declines. She cannot provoke the authorities persecuting her new faith.
But when a friend invites her to the dead man's home, she is drawn into the murder. The widow confesses to attacking Dionysius with a knife a year earlier but swears she did not kill him and entreats Sabina to clear her name.
Suspects abound when a fortune teller who predicted Dionysius's death discloses enigmatic clues. But is she hiding her guilt? His children accuse the widow of an affair with Dionysius's friend and banker. A daughter's dubious wedding is suddenly on the nuptial fast track, unsavory, and letters written by Dionysius the night before he died uncover an unsavory business partnership.
