The papers in this volume challenge the idea that ancient and medieval philosophy was characterized by the naive assumption that whatever is natural, must be good. The contributions trace what were in fact very complex interrelations between nature and such concepts as law, legitimacy, and justice. The volume covers a wide historical range stretching from Plato and Aristotle to Late Antiquity and the Islamic and Christian Middle Ages.
